Life as a Brother

  • What to expect as a brother:

Unpredictable? Spontaneous? Upbeat? How can you describe being a brother in Pi Kappa Phi? It is nearly impossible to include all aspects of being a brother in Pi Kappa Phi at the University of Tennessee. However, here are a few points that are important to note.

    The Social Life
Working hard deserves playing hard, and Pi Kappa Phi understands that college is supposed to be some of the greatest years of anyone's life. Mixers, formals, date parties, band parties, football tailgates, cookouts, basketball games, along with the spontaneity that can be found within the fraternity come together to form an outstanding social schedule. The fall semester of 2009 played host to a number of band parties, date parties, cookouts and tailgates, mixers, and a formal, while the Spring semester is quickly filling up.

    Philanthropy Work
Pi Kappa Phi is always looking for ways to get involved within the community. Each semester, the brotherhood will participate in three of four different sorority philanthropy events aimed at raising money and awareness for an organization. In addition, the brotherhood will build wheel chair ramps for people with disabilities and makes it a point to regularly send a group of guys to PUSH America's Give-A-Push Weekend to better the lives of people with disabilities. During each Spring semester, the brotherhood hosts a week long "Beach Week" to raise money for people with physical and mental disabilities. The week includes an Awareness Dinner, Band Performances, a crowning of Miss Pi Kapp, and a sorority volleyball tournament.

    The Fraternity House
The University of Tennessee currently has fifteen fraternity houses located on campus, with 13 of them located on Fraternity Row. Pi Kappa Phi is located at 1828 Fraternity Park Drive, immediately behind Fraternity Park. The fraternity house has fifteen bedrooms, plus a President's suite, an alumni room/study room, kitchen, living room, and chapter room. A meal plan is available to the brothers that live in the house and is delivered for lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday.

    Athletics
Each year, Pi Kappa Phi participates in a number of intramural sports at the University of Tennessee, as well as other leagues outside of the Recreation Department.  Whether you play football, basketball, baseball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, golf, volleyball, or just looking for a weightlifting partner, there is always a brother ready to participate.

    Academics
The Brothers of Pi Kappa Phi sometimes hate to admit it, but the real reason that every person is here at the University of Tennessee is academics. The fraternity makes available resources for all brothers to help them with study skills and grades. A scholarship chairman maintains test files, arranges twice weekly study sessions and tutors, and keeps a watch on the grades of the Associate Members and the Brotherhood. In addition, the Alumni room at the fraternity house, located away from the bedrooms, is equipped with reading lamps, a full sized desk, and couches that provide a quiet space for brothers to study.
